Before you put laptops or other battery operated devices into storage, remove the batteries. Even in climate controlled storage units, batteries can corrode. If that happens with the battery in place, both the battery and the device could be destroyed.

Wood doesn’t do well under the pressures of extreme heat or cold, especially if the temperature moves quickly between the extremes. This expansion and contraction will lead to cracking, tearing, and warping, but climate-controlled units will keep this from happening.

When storing mattresses, box springs, and bedframes, place them along the wall and on their sides. It is also a good idea to set them on a sheet of fabric to protect them from damage from the floor.

One of the first storage companies in America was created in the 1850s by the son of a Dutch immigrant, Martin Bekins. He built a facility to store household valuables and other items.

Why choose climate-controlled storage? If the items you’re storing are valuable, chances are they can be replaced but the cost can be prohibitive. If the items have sentimental value, it’s unlikely they can be replaced at any price.
