"Homoousios" (same substance or essence) correctly describes what was already revealed in Scripture. See John 10:30-33. (Jesus said, "I and the Father are one"). By their reaction, the Jews showed exactly how they understood what Jesus had said. They accused him of blasphemy. The church recognized God's revelation by Scripture, not pagan philosophy, as the origin of Bible doctrine. Philosophy did not "shape Christianity" as the title suggests.
