Having a job before a driver’s license wasn’t about being impressive, it was about learning responsibility early. You showed up because people were counting on you, not because it felt convenient. Work taught patience, humility, and pride long before it ever taught money. It shaped character in quiet ways nobody posted about or applauded.

Seeing perfectly healthy young adults refuse to work hits a nerve because effort used to be expected, not negotiated. You learned fast that life didn’t owe you comfort just because you existed. Hard work didn’t make you miserable, it made you capable. That lesson feels rarer now, and maybe that’s why it still matters so much.
