As the investigation into the Cyclospora diarrheal illness affecting multiple Michigan counties continues, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has issued additional recommendations to help reduce the risk of illness from fresh produce.

While no specific food or supplier has been identified, previous Cyclospora outbreaks have been linked to:

🥗 Bagged salad mixes
🌿 Fresh cilantro and basil
🧅 Green onions
🍓 Raspberries
🫛 Snow peas

Reduce your risk by:

✅ Washing all fresh produce under running water
✅ Choosing whole heads of lettuce instead of bagged salad mixes when possible
✅ Cooking fresh produce when you can
✅ Washing your hands before preparing or eating food

These precautions are important for young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. If you are experiencing severe or persistent diarrhea, contact your healthcare provider.
