☀️ Extreme Heat Alert for Pets! ☀️

The heat index over the next several days is expected to be dangerously high, and it's important to remember that our pets are especially vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.

🐾 Never leave your pet outside for extended periods of time.
Even with access to shade and water, high temperatures and humidity can quickly lead to overheating and heat stroke.

🔥 Watch out for hot pavement and concrete!
If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your pet's paws. Asphalt and concrete can reach temperatures much higher than the air temperature and can cause painful burns in just seconds. Walk your pets early in the morning or later in the evening when surfaces have cooled down.

🚨 Know the signs of heat stroke:
• Excessive panting
• Drooling
• Bright red gums
• Weakness or lethargy
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Difficulty breathing
• Collapse

Heat stroke is a medical emergency and can become life-threatening very quickly.

💧 Always provide fresh water, limit outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day, and never leave your pet in a parked vehicle—even for a few minutes.

If you believe your pet may be suffering from heat stroke, move them to a cool area immediately and contact Big Bend Animal Hospital right away.
