So we opened her up.

Flying Lady, a distinguished Trumpy, represents a legacy of American yacht building when vessels were shaped by hand, eye, and experience. To preserve that legacy, the refit began deep within her structure — inside the bilges and along her original frames — where time, moisture, and use quietly leave their mark.

Sections of aging framing were opened, assessed, and replaced where required, each new timber fitted to honor the original Trumpy construction. Structural members were sistered and reinforced, restoring strength without compromising authenticity.

The bilges were stripped back — years of residue removed, surfaces treated and stabilized, and every compartment sealed with modern protective coatings designed to preserve the integrity of the hull from the inside out. Fresh paint now lines the bays, improving visibility, maintenance access, and long-term protection for the vessel’s internal structure.
