The year was 2010. The United States Men’s National Team was to play Algeria in our final group stage match of World Cup in South Africa ⚽️

We needed a win here to advance out of the group stage and into the knockout round of 16. Neither team was able to score in 90 minutes, and then like a burst of lightning in the 91st minute, a counter attack that started with goal keeping legend Tim Howard and ended 10 seconds later when Landon Donovan collected a rebound off the Algerian goalkeeper and slashed it home to the back of the net.

The commentator, Ian Darke, shouted the phrase, “Go, Go USA!” into the microphone following the goal sealing this moment as one to be remembered by Americans for generations 🥅
