Returning to running after having a baby can be confusing and hard to navigate
When can/should you start running again?
What are the signs your body is ready or not ready for the impact of running?
Are there some tests you can do to assess your readiness?
What are some of the mistakes runners make?
Like I said, the PP journey can be a hard one to navigate. Here are three common mistakes runners make in their PP running journey
1️⃣ they return to running too soon
👉 the timing to return to running PP will look different for everyone. Some may be ready at 6 weeks, the majority however are not quite ready at that point and it's recommended to wait until 12 weeks PP to begin. That's assuming your pelvic floor is repaired and healthy enough for the impact... which brings me to mistake number 2
2️⃣ they do not seek help / clearance from a pelvic floor physical therapist
👉 typically you do not need a doctor's referral to go see a pelvic floor physical therapist. I highly recommend seeing one PP to have them assess your strength and address any issues BEFORE you go out for runs
3️⃣ they do no begin pelvic floor and core rehab in the early days or they wait until there is an issue
👉 in most cases, pelvic floor work can begin right after having a baby. It is a muscle that needs to be rehabbed right away. Don't wait for there to be incontinence issues or other issues before seeing a PT or doing the work
The postpartum journey can be really challenging. Running will always be there so take your time, allow your body to heal, focus on what you can control, and seek professional help!
