One of my favorites is native columbine. I’ve tried growing it in several places around my house without much luck. Yet at Whitewater State Park it spills out of cracks in the rocks like it was always meant to be there.
Early bloomers are quietly taking over the forest floor at Whitewater State Park—Dutchman’s Breeches, Bloodroot, Rue Anemone, Spring Beauty, Field Pussytoes, and Wild Sarsaparilla, each one here for such a short moment.
I’ve been going weekly, watching the ground transform before the canopy fills in. It feels like catching a series of fleeting exhibitions—each week, a new collection.
As an artist, I’m drawn to the ephemerality and variety. Spring doesn’t arrive all at once—it reveals itself, piece by piece.
A few of my largest botanical pieces are on display at the Charter House in Rochester for just one more month.
I’m so grateful for this space and the chance to share this work.
Back in the studio this weekend, I’ve been leaning into a new series inspired by the four seasons—but spring keeps pulling me in. There’s something about this time of year… the soft return of color, the quiet persistence of new growth - I hope to channel this energy into my work.
