As we gear up for the week, remember to talk kindly to ourselves! Language is important.

Some days are just hard. A kid gets left out. Bombs a test. Has a conflict. Feels embarrassed. Or wakes up already in a mood he or she cannot explain. In those moments, telling a child to “calm down” does not help much.

What helps is language. Simple thoughts like: “It’s okay to have a not-okay day.” “Just because I’m thinking something doesn’t make it true.” “This hurts, so I need to be extra kind to myself.” “This feeling will pass.”

Coping thoughts give kids words they can use when they feel upset, frustrated, or embarrassed so they do not spiral or shut down. Coping thoughts are talking to yourself in a way you would talk to a good friend. They are a way to re-frame what is going on.
