Emilio Medina is 26 years old and lives in Villalcázar de Sirga, a small village in Spain's Palencia province. He works as both a farmer and a forest firefighter, but one unexpected message on Instagram led him to a project that could help preserve a piece of agricultural history.

Someone contacted Medina to tell him they had a jar of tomato seeds that had been stored away since 1916 in Soria, Spain. The seeds were more than a century old dark, dry, and seemingly lifeless.

With little expectation that they would grow, Medina planted them using traditional techniques passed down by older farmers in his village.

Against the odds, the seeds germinated.

The plants eventually produced tomatoes with thin skins and a rich, intense flavor that Medina says is "very, very, very similar" to the tomatoes people would have eaten generations ago, before modern commercial varieties became widespread.

The discovery became part of a much larger mission. Medina has been building a seed bank containing more than 1,000 traditional crop varieties, many rescued from forgotten jars, attics, cellars, and families who had carefully preserved seeds for decades.

For Medina, preserving old seeds is not enough.

He believes they remain truly alive only if they continue to be planted, grown, and shared with new generations.

As modern agriculture increasingly relies on a smaller number of commercial crop varieties, projects like his are helping preserve agricultural diversity, local food traditions, and flavors that might otherwise disappear.

Sometimes, protecting history does not require a museum.

Sometimes, it begins with planting a single seed that has been waiting more than a hundred years to grow again.
