Give it up for KKFI (90.1 FM) in Kansas City, the area's premier independent, non-commercial community radio station. Broadcasting out of studios located on Main Street in Kansas City, Missouri, it is a listener-supported, 501(c)(3) nonprofit owned by the Mid-Coast Radio Project.

Launched as a 100,000-watt FM signal in 1988, KKFI has spent over three decades acting as a community amplifier. It is supported by a core staff and a network of dedicated volunteer programmers who produce weekly shows.

Kudos to WMCB-LP 107.9 FM in Greenfield, Massachusetts. Their signal reaches almost all of Greenfield, as well as just over the borders into neighboring towns Gill and Deerfield, and the village of Turners Falls. Their mission includes enabling and encouraging the open exchange of ideas and information within the Greenfield community.

The Grassroots Radio Conference salutes WBPU-LPFM 96.3 FM, St. Petersburg, Florida. Black Power 96 Radio is a project of the African People’s Education and Defense Fund, “the baddest non-profit on the planet.” Their mission is to defend the human and civil rights of the African community through educational and cultural programming, to provide professional radio broadcasting training, and to promote economic development and self-reliance in the African community.

The Grassroots Radio Conference recognizes WTJU, Virginia 91.1FM. Founded in 1955 and on-air since 1957, WTJU began as an educational radio station at the University of Virginia. Currently it is a community driven station with the students now an LPFM channel. For more than six decades, they have continued to extend UVA’s educational mission and bring people together through music and conversation. Their operations also include WXTJ-LP 100.1 FM (student radio), Virginia Audio Collective (podcasts), CharlottesvilleClassical.org, and a variety of educational programs.
