Here’s a cool piece of History!

A kind patron researching the history and development of the glued laminated timber industry recently reached out with this fascinating photo of the beams in the original Rolla High School gymnasium. These massive beams were manufactured by Unit Structures, Inc. in Peshtigo, Wisconsin, and can still be seen in the ceiling of the current RHS Performing Arts Center. At the time, they were some of the largest beams ever made.

"In the interior of Unit Structures' plant, a 108-foot clear span tapered beam for the High School at Rolla, Mo., is lifted off the forming jig. Quality control of finished product is maintained by continuous inspection and testing of strength of glue bonds, moisture content of lumber, physical properties of glue, rate, and consistency of glue spread, adequacy of gluing pressures, proper curing cycles, and other factors affecting quality of the finished product. Unit Structures maintains a fully-equipped laboratory to carry out quality control tests under the direction of qualified technicians."
