Could a medication used for weight loss have benefits beyond the scale?

New research presented at the 2026 ASCO Conference is raising important questions about the broader health effects of GLP-1 medications.

Researchers found:

โœ”๏ธ Women using GLP-1 receptor agonists had a 30% lower risk of breast cancer compared to those not using these medications.

โœ”๏ธ Women with a breast cancer diagnosis experienced lower rates of metastatic progression.

โœ”๏ธ Researchers believe these effects may be linked to improvements in chronic inflammation, insulin resistance, and adipose (fat) tissue biologyโ€”all factors associated with hormone-sensitive cancers.

This is an important reminder that health is about much more than weight loss. Metabolic health, inflammation, hormones, and insulin regulation all play critical roles in long-term wellness.

While this research is promising, it is still emerging. These findings do not mean GLP-1 medications prevent or treat cancer. They do, however, highlight the importance of understanding how metabolic health affects disease risk.
