Could a medication used for weight loss have benefits beyond the scale?
New research presented at the 2026 ASCO Conference is raising important questions about the broader health effects of GLP-1 medications.
Researchers found:
โ๏ธ Women using GLP-1 receptor agonists had a 30% lower risk of breast cancer compared to those not using these medications.
โ๏ธ Women with a breast cancer diagnosis experienced lower rates of metastatic progression.
โ๏ธ Researchers believe these effects may be linked to improvements in chronic inflammation, insulin resistance, and adipose (fat) tissue biologyโall factors associated with hormone-sensitive cancers.
This is an important reminder that health is about much more than weight loss. Metabolic health, inflammation, hormones, and insulin regulation all play critical roles in long-term wellness.
While this research is promising, it is still emerging. These findings do not mean GLP-1 medications prevent or treat cancer. They do, however, highlight the importance of understanding how metabolic health affects disease risk.
