Markey Church is celebrating 120 years! 🎉

Roscommon County population grew significantly from 1950-1970, and so did attendance at Markey Church. Ground was broken on the current site of Markey Church on Flint Road in June 1973, and the building was open for worship less in February 1974.

During this time, Rev. Robert Stuck, his wife Nelda, and their three daughters continued to live in the parsonage home next to the original church building. Tragically, the home caught fire in August 1974, killing 11-year-old Shari, seriously injuring Rev. Stuck, and destroying the home. A new parsonage home was built, and the Stuck family served Markey Church until 1978. Rev. Stuck faithfully continued his ministry at churches in Michigan and Indiana for many decades.

This photo shows the church in the late 1970s.

Markey Church is celebrating 120 years! 🎉

John Dosh served in the U.S. Navy in Hawaii in 1944 and 1945, and then returned to the midwest where he attended Northern Seminary. After graduation the now Rev. John Dosh served as pastor at Markey Church. During the 1950s, the church was renovated, actually being moved from the foundation to add a basement. Once the basement was built, the sanctuary was moved back onto the site. These renovations also added the first indoor restrooms to the church!

Under Rev. Dosh's leadership, Markey Church officially joined the American Baptist Churches USA in 1953. Rev. Dosh helped establish Community Baptist Church of Saint Helen. After leaving Markey in 1956, Rev. Dosh and his wife Ardis continued to serve other churches in Michigan for many years to come.

Pictured is the church sanctuary in 1956, after renovations.

Markey Church is celebrating 120 years! 🎉

This photo from the 1940s shows members of the church congregation outside of the church building, then at the corner of Markey and School Roads.

Population of Roscommon County was just 3,668 in 1940. However, tourism in the area grew during this time, with resorts, restaurants, service stations, and canoe liveries opening for visitors and local residents.

Five pastors served Markey Church from 1934-1951, all continuing on to pastor other churches in Michigan and out-of-state.
