As we start getting near the summer months, understanding how to properly cool your dog down is very important.⁣
⁣
One thing to note is if your dog is overheating or showing signs of serious panting struggles, lethargy, drooling or vomiting, please seek medical attention immediately.⁣
⁣
Make sure you give your dog frequent breaks, access to water, and consider going outside for shorter time periods in hot weather.⁣
⁣
Did you notice Pluto, the dog we rescued from the Brooklyn ACC who had been in the shelter for 172 days and was about to be put down the next day?⁣
⁣
If you haven't seen that video, I put the link in my stories so you can see what his behavior was like in the shelter and notice the difference in his energy now.⁣
⁣
Its amazing what leadership, exercise, fulfilling his instinctual needs and giving affection/attention at the right times can do!⁣

This is a great example of dogs who are in a calm follower state and have a great relationship with their human.⁣ ⁣ Many people would see these dogs and think they aren't happy because they aren't excited.⁣ ⁣ That's probably one of the biggest misconceptions with dogs that "an excited dog is a happy dog."⁣ ⁣ A dog being excited doesn't mean it's happy.⁣ ⁣ A dog lunging at another dog is excited.⁣ ⁣ A dog with separation anxiety is excited.⁣ ⁣ A dog biting who is fearful of humans is excited.⁣ ⁣ None of these dogs are happy.⁣ ⁣ Dogs CAN be excited and happy, like playing a ball game, but the point I'm making is excitement does NOT always mean a dog is happy.⁣ ⁣ Dogs CAN also be calm and happy, like the dogs in this video.⁣ ⁣ With my dogs, I nurture calmness to create their default mindset to be calm and happy.⁣ ⁣ We definitely do excitement and happiness through play but after we always end the game and go back to calmness so the dogs can be fulfilled, have fun, but live overall in a peaceful, happy state of mind.⁣ ⁣ *𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘰 𝘪𝘴 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘜.𝘚. Pawprints in the Sand

My name is Nicolette Anastasiou, and I’m the innkeeper at Greyt Greys. Since 1974, I’ve been involved in animal rescue ventures in the United States, Greece, Bahamas, Canada, and India.

In 2006, I adopted my first greyhound while living in Virginia. It was then I met the first half of my inspiration for Greyt Greys: Grace (aka Skillet Head). Six months later, we moved to Austin, Texas where Grace immediately chose a greyt brother: Will (aka Blazin Bronx). Together, Will & Grace fueled my passion to serve, love, and protect the very breed that taught me what that truly meant. We soon became a fostering family for Austin Greyhound Adoption (AGA).

In 2014 we accidentally stumbled across a petite, young girl: Daisy (aka Rio Pearl). But, there are no accidents. Shortly after meeting and turning over their mission to Daisy, both Will & Grace left for the rainbow bridge.
