This is our new daily carry toy: the Invixiball, a featherlight, Grade 5 titanium 30mm bouncy ball. Developed by Aaron Chow at Vixiv in Ohio, it uses a network of rhombic holes in a hollow titanium sphere to create a sufficiently compliant skin that happily bounces off hard things with a pleasant “tink.” About 308 years ago, a guy named Abraham Sharp wrote a book titled “Geometry Imrpov’d” on the topic of, amongst other things, cool polyhedra. On Plate II at the end of this book, you will find a version of this pattern. This was mostly a mathematical exercise as opposed to Buckminster Fuller’s work which focused on structural efficiency. Many people have used Sharp’s work for physical designs over the last 300+ years, including Professor George Hart at Columbia and even some titanium 3D printing companies, but Aaron at Vixiv is the first to manage the process refinement and structural design to achieve the required combination of accuracy, strength, and flexibility to bounce but not break. It will most certainly dent wood and other flooring, so it’s best to only bounce it on concrete or asphalt. We’ll be listing a (microscopically) laser engraved run of ten 30mm Invixiballs on our website this weekend for $199 each.
