Congratulations to our 2025 scholarship winner MacKenna Durkee of Dayton (pictured here with our ED Al Sicard) She just graduated from Thornton Academy in S**o and want to share this: “I am incredibly grateful to the DemCorps for awarding me this scholarship. Your generosity has made a meaningful impact on my ability to pursue higher education and work toward a career in global service and diplomacy. This support motivates me to continue striving for excellence and giving back to my community. Thank you for believing in my potential and investing in my future.

During my time in high school, I had the honor of serving as Student Body President and Treasurer of the National Honor Society, where I developed leadership skills, as well as learned the importance of community service. I was also actively involved in Unified Basketball and Community Leaders Club, two programs that helped me build meaningful connections and promote inclusion within my school community. These experiences have shaped my passion for creating positive change, which I plan to carry with me as I begin my next chapter at American University, where I will be majoring in International Studies.”

For our Maine seniors….especially in Biddeford who just received their new tax bill….the Democratically controlled legislature failed seniors by letting the program expire as opposed to tweaking/capping it….from the City of Biddeford:

I am a senior citizen who applied for a program to stabilize my property taxes. Why isn’t it working?
A: Last year, the Maine Legislature created a program called the Property Tax Stabilization Program that would freeze property tax bills for senior citizens. This year, that program was eliminated by the state. If you were a part of this program, your 2024-2025 tax bill will be ‘unfrozen’. This means that your tax bill for this year will reflect this year’s tax increase, last year’s tax increase, and adjustments to property values that were made in 2023. As a result, many of our senior citizens will be seeing substantial increases to their tax bills this year.

U.S. is sending a carrier strike group closer to Israel and will begin supplying munitions starting Sunday The U.S. is also looking at options for a possible evacuation of Americans from Israel. Nothing has been decided, but one option involves putting some Americans on Navy ships.

Congrats to Amy Bradford of S**o….a 2023 graduate of Thornton Academy and winner of our college scholarship….She thanks our members and had this to say:
First of all, thank you so much for choosing me to be awarded with this scholarship.
My time at TA has been largely defined by the arts community, whether visual, instrumental, or performative. I was a member of the TA orchestra all 4 years as a violinist, acted in 4 productions with the TA Players, and just this past year was accepted into the Treble Choir. I have involved myself in many different AP courses, including AP Art and Design which I was enrolled in this year as I designed the banners for the Drama Club's fall and spring productions. I have designed all the promotional artwork for the past 4 stage productions at TA. Over the years I have won multiple awards and recognitions through the Scholastic Arts Competition for my art across multiple mediums. Apart from the Arts, I have also participated in the Classics Club and taken the National Latin Exam three times, winning recognition for each. In short, I would say I have been a very dedicated student at TA, one who seeks out new experiences and pours her heart into each new challenge. I will miss that environment now that I've graduated, but I look forward to finding new challenges in the future. In the fall I plan to study Anthropology at UMaine Orono and take part in the orchestra program
Good luck to Amy!
