Today, the life, service, and legacy of Parole Agent Joshua Byrd were honored, marking one year since his tragic death in the line of duty.

Family, friends, colleagues, and law enforcement partners gathered at the Richard A. McGee Correctional Training Center in Galt for the solemn unveiling of a plaque enrolling Byrd’s name into the CDCR and California Correctional Peace Officers Association memorial.

This permanent tribute will help ensure Byrd’s sacrifice is honored as an enduring part of CDCR’s shared history and the department’s steadfast commitment to remembering those who gave their lives in service.

Agent Byrd’s dedication to public service, and the profound impact he made on those he served alongside, will never be forgotten.

Deshawn Snell joined 39 others June 26 as they graduated from the Basic Academy class 2-26P.

Snell is familiar with CDCR since he is a second-generation departmental employee. His father worked for 25 years at the Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison at Corcoran (SATF) as well as at California State Prison, Corcoran. He retired as a lieutenant.

His mother also recently retired after more than 25 years as a SATF vocational instructor.

“(My father) recently, unfortunately, passed away a little after his retirement, but he did live a great life. He always taught me to be firm, fair and consistent,” Snell said. “So, I definitely want to emulate him and just make him proud.”

For the first time in the state, eight incarcerated students have earned an Associate of Science degree in Forestry, marking the historic milestone at the Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) Rising Scholars Program (RSP) on June 26, 2026. The achievement was part of a graduating class of 23 where all students obtained a Foundational Skills Certificate or Certificate of Achievement in Forestry. 🎓

Through a partnership between CDCR, LTCC and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE), incarcerated students in RSP can earn stackable forestry certificates that blend hands-on training and academic coursework, leading to degree completion and career opportunities in forestry and wildfire service. 🔥
