Punch Jones

This photo was taken in Wyomjng in 1918. The man on the right is my great grandfather. He was born around 1840, and by the age of fourteen left home in Kansas with a team of oxen and an army wagon, working as a drover, eventually making made his way to small town known as Denver. He worked his way to Wyomjng several years later and began raising cattle, and eventually sheep, something uncommon at the time. He endured brutal winters and rugged conditions, with his fortunes rising or falling dependent on weather and cattle prices. Through hard work, perseverance, and grit he became one of the largest cattle ranchers in Wyoming at the time. He died in 1931, almost 90 years old, having lived a life that defies today’s understanding. He is, and was, a part of America’s history of self determination and the ideal of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Happy 250 this July 4th, Abner.
