Creating an African American cultural enterprise district connected by a community land bridge.

07/10/2026

Big ideas. Bold vision. Lasting impact.

We're working to create Minnesota's first African American Cultural Enterprise District, connected by a community land bridge. This vision goes beyond reconnecting streets—it reconnects people, opportunity, and a community that has endured generations of harm.

By repairing, restoring, and revitalizing Rondo, we have the opportunity to help close racial disparity gaps while creating a stronger future for generations to come.

Rondo has lost so much. Now it's time to build something that gives back.

We must build a bridge better.

What was Rondo like before the highway?

Rondo was a community filled with Black-owned businesses, families, churches, music, laughter, and neighbors who knew one another by name. Every block held stories and traditions.

When Interstate 94 cut through the heart of Rondo, hundreds of residents were displaced, and a vibrant community was divided. But the memories remain—and so does the vision for what our future can be.

As you scroll through these photos, take a moment to imagine the sounds, the conversations, the storefronts, and the life that once filled these streets.

History isn't just something we look back on. It's something we honor by continuing the work to restore, reconnect, and revitalize Rondo for generations to come.

💬 Do you recognize any of these places? Or do you have a favorite memory or story about historic Rondo? We'd love to hear it below.

Pausing Rethinking I-94 isn't practical—it's radical.

For some, a pause may sound like the safe option. But for the Rondo community, another delay means extending the impacts we've lived with for more than 70 years.

The Rethinking I-94 process exists to evaluate the future of the corridor, gather community input, and explore solutions that can improve safety, connectivity, economic opportunity, and quality of life. Stopping that work doesn't solve today's challenges—it postpones tomorrow's opportunities.

Restoring Rondo requires momentum, collaboration, and a commitment to repairing decades of harm—not putting progress on hold.

We've already invested years of community engagement, technical analysis, and planning. The time for continued action is now.
