Update: This baby deer was left for mom to take care of. It was healthy.
Animal Control has started receiving calls about baby deer (fawns) found alone. Did you know this is completely normal? Until a fawn is strong enough to keep up, the mother deer leaves it safely hidden while she goes off to feed. This isn’t abandonment — it’s a survival strategy. By staying away, the mother avoids attracting predators to her newborn. As they grow, they may wander short distances, but they still rely on their mothers. Most does return at dawn and dusk to feed or move their young. Animal Control will not remove a fawn unless it is crying constantly, visibly injured, or the mother is confirmed deceased. A quiet, still fawn is behaving exactly as nature intended.
