Please consider donating!! Koko is doing so well!

Happy Friday! The sun is coming out and Spring feels like it's on its way!

We're heading into Spring with a few new pups heading our way including a litter of puppies, Minnie and Briar Rose are heading to us soon and KoKo is finishing up her board and train before heading to her forever home!

In preparing for the arrival and continued training we need to reach out and ask for more help with fundraising! Keep an eye out for more requests for help for specific items soon too!

- Meet Koko! -

Koko is a rescue pup with and she’s joined the DU team for a 4 week board and train ! Koko came from a very horrendous hoarding case as a pup and is now a spicy teenager. She is so incredibly sweet but is reactive on leash and has some teenage feelings. She has already adjusted well, and she is so incredibly smart. We have very high hopes for this girl and can’t wait to get to work!

PNW Cattle Dog Rescue invests a lot in training into their foster dogs, and Koko is just one of them. They NEED donations to help sponsor her board and train. They have been hit hard with surprise medical bills, and despite a deep rescue discount, a 4 week board and train is still an investment. Please consider donating to help cover her training costs!

Stay tuned for updates!

- Meet Leroy! -

Leroy is a rescue pup with and he’s joined the DU team for a 3 week board and train! Leroy was a street dog turned rescue dog, and once arriving to Oregon, it was clear he needed a solid behavior assessment for possible separation distress. This boy loves HARD and is the sweetest boy. He has done very well his first week, adjusting to routines, and doing fantastic with trial separations. Despite his street dog tendancies, he is super eager to learn and very handler focused. He now walks well on leash, recall is improving, and knows lots of new cues like sit, lay down, drop it, and a positive interrupter (kissy noise) when he’s getting into mischief or an ask for focus. He has a fantastic temprament and does well with kiddos and other dogs.

He is such a sweet boy and we know his forever home is out there! The next couple weeks we’ll be working on lengthening his separations and more advanced obedience and cues (dare we say, he may be a Canine Good Citizen candidate?).

Oftentimes we see a board and train as a fantastic opportunity for a “routine reset” for some dogs and a great opportunity for an owner or rescue to get a detailed behavior assessment in a home setting. While many behaviors can’t be fully resolved in the length of a board and train, it gives the pup a solid training foundation, and the humans a solid understanding of their dog.

While we offer a significant rescue discount, the rescue still invested in this boy to be set up on the right paw, and any donations to the rescue are greatly appreciated.

- Wednesday’s Training Tip of the Week: Let Your Dog Sleep! -

Sleep and naps are absolutely vital for our pups but can often be missed during puppihood and adolescence, which can cause an overtired cranky pup!

Signs your dog isn’t getting enough sleep/relaxation:
🐾 Excessive vocalization or mouthiness
🐾 Restlessness
🐾 Humping/self soothing behaviors
🐾 Short fuse/ cranky baby!

So how much sleep should your pup be getting daily?

Puppies + Seniors: 18-20 hours
Adolescents: 16-18 hours
Adults: 14-16 hours

Wow that’s a lot of sleep! On average your pup should be sleeping 9-12 hours at night with several naps during the day.

So what do you do if your pup is lacking sleep?

🐾 Crate training and structured naps can be vital for puppihood and adolescents. Just like human toddlers and teenagers - they can forget to sleep!
🐾 Practice sleep hygiene and have a routine around naps. Give a chew or passive enrichment to help them wind down for naptime or bedtime. Keep the area dark and quiet or even a noise machine to cue sleep time.
🐾 Decrease the high arousal play during the day if your pup has a hard time sleeping.
🐾 Add more passive enrichment in your pups life to reinforce rest and relaxation!

Wednesday says follow these sleep guides for a couple weeks and you’ll be amazed how many problem behaviors disappear!
