Ocean Beach and the Great Highway in 1936 showed the city’s western edge at its most open and peaceful. Cars traveled along the coastal road with views of the Pacific stretching endlessly beside them. The sandy shoreline drew both locals and visitors looking for sea air. The cool fog often rolled in, softening the sunlight. Along the highway, small cafes and rest stops served travelers. It was a simple time when a drive by the ocean was a favorite weekend escape.
