The Great Storm of 1975 was an intense winter storm system that impacted a large portion of the Central and Southeast United States from January 9th through the 12th. It unleashed dozens of tornadoes across the Central and Southeastern U.S. and over 2 feet of snow in the upper Midwest, killing 58 people when it was finally over with. This storm remains one of the worst weather events to ever strike parts of the Midwest, as well as one of the largest January tornado outbreaks on record in the United States.
It was a sobering reminder of nature's power. Let's honor those affected back then and appreciate the improved weather forecasting and preparedness we rely on today.
