It is time to cut out the dead sticks on your H. macrophylla and cape cap hydrangeas. Here on the coast of Massachusetts, we had a mid April frost that killed many of the developing flower buds. If they didn’t open up with the last few days of heat, they are dead. Therefore cut out the dead wood to the ground and cut any dead tips down to the first set of leaves. If you have a type that only flowers on old wood, such as Nikko Blue, you may not get any blooms this year. Rebloomers may bloom a little later on the new wood.
