Myofunctional Therapy in Utah
09/28/2025
How many of you have been told that your child will grow out of snoring or grinding at night? It is burned in my brain that many years ago, my sister asked me about her son's snoring and grinding at night. I didn't have a good answer for her then and her dentist said that he'll grow out of it. Now I know that is sleep disordered breathing and it is linked to so many problems.
Now I have answers! When you know better, you do better.

Our bodies are so good at adapting that someone can live decades with a tongue-tie without noticing any symptoms. We call those adaptions compensations, and they can lead head, neck, and jaw tension and pain.

Many tongue-ties are diagnosed due to breastfeeding issues, but they can still get missed.
In school, I was taught that if it didn't affect your feeding or speech, it wasn't a problem. It's the breathing and growth and development that shocked me when I first learned all these things.

It is important to do Myofunctional therapy before, during, and after a tongue-tie surgery. Before because therapy will help prepare for surgery, making it easier for the Dr to do a complete release. It can also help determine if you even need surgery. During because it helps with wound healing and prevents it from being reattached. After is to help correct dysfunction and compensations learned from having a tongue-tie in the first place.

Some people are scared to start Myofunctional therapy because they do not want surgery. I have also heard it said that frenectomies are done too often. But I'm here to say that not all tongue-ties need to be released. Our tongues need to be functional, meaning comfortably suctioning to the roof of our mouth and able to do a proper swallow. If it can do that, you're good. But for those that can't, a functional frenectomy will be a game changer.

Our tongues need to sit comfortably on the roof of our mouths to help guide jaw growth wide and forward. If a child's tongue rests low due to a tie or mouth breathing, their jaws form more narrow and downward. This can lead to crowded teeth, smaller sinuses, and sleep apnea.

Over the next few days, I will be posting some myths about tongue-ties. They are pretty common and can affect people in different ways.
Some symptoms of a tongue-tie:
TMJ issues
clenching and grinding
neck and/or shoulder tension
headaches and migraines
mouth breathing
poor sleep
sleep apnea
ADD and ADHD in kids
chewing and swallowing issues
These are not all the symptoms of a tongue-tie. If you believe you may have one, meet with a Myofunctional Therapist.
