What happened to the researcher who helped uncover water on a distant planet?
Carl Grillmair, a respected astrophysicist associated with Caltech, was discovered fatally shot outside his residence in Llano, California, according to authorities responding to an emergency call on February 17, 2026. The scientist, aged 67, was known within the scientific community for research connected to exoplanets and atmospheric analysis of distant worlds.
Among his most notable achievements was participation in research that identified evidence of water v***r on a planet orbiting another star system, a finding considered significant in the search for conditions that could support life. His sudden death has drawn attention both because of his scientific reputation and the unclear circumstances surrounding the incident.
Investigators continue examining the case as the scientific community reacts to the loss of a prominent researcher.

Ukrainian refugees in Austria are being told: sell your car or lose your benefits. No exceptions.
Since January 2025, most Austrian federal states count a car as a "realizable asset." If you own one, you may lose access to basic welfare — housing, food allowance, support payments. The reasoning: if you can afford insurance, fuel, and maintenance, you can afford to live without state help.
Around 37,000 Ukrainian refugees currently receive basic aid in Austria. Many drove across multiple borders to get there. Now they're being told to sell the vehicle that got them out — or lose everything else.
Vienna refused to enforce the rule and reviews each case individually. The rest of the country didn't.
Human rights organizations call it discriminatory. Officials call it consistent. The image of a Ferrari with Ukrainian plates tells its own story — but the rule doesn't just apply to Ferraris.

From 1979 to 2012. Every news broadcast. Every commercial. Every single day.
Marion Stokes was a Philadelphia librarian, civil rights activist, and former Communist Party organizer. In 1979, when the Iranian Hostage Crisis hit the news, she pressed record on her VCR — and never stopped.
For 35 years, she ran up to eight VCRs at once, recording CNN, Fox, MSNBC, C-SPAN, and local news around the clock. Every six hours, she or her husband swapped the tapes. She rented nine separate apartments just to store them. She funded the entire operation with profits from an early investment in Apple stock.
Networks were erasing and recycling their own broadcast tapes to save money. Marion knew that. She also knew that whoever controls the archive controls the narrative.
Her final recording was made on December 14, 2012 — coverage of the Sandy Hook shooting. She died that same day. Her son donated the entire collection to the Internet Archive. It took four shipping containers to move it. As of 2026, the tapes are still being digitized.

Millions of Epstein documents were released but key records about one accusation were missing
Federal officials published millions of documents tied to Jeffrey Epstein but excluded key records connected to a woman who accused Donald Trump of sexual assault in the 1980s. The allegation, made public in 2019, claimed she was a minor at the time and that both Trump and Epstein were involved. The accusation remains unverified and Trump has repeatedly denied any misconduct.
The document release followed a law enacted after bipartisan congressional pressure, requiring broad disclosure of Epstein related files. The statute permits redactions to protect victims, shield explicit material, or preserve ongoing investigations, but it explicitly forbids withholding information for reasons of political sensitivity or reputational damage. Questions about why certain records were not released have fueled ongoing scrutiny of the Justice Department’s decisions.
The controversy highlights the tension between victim protection, transparency, and public accountability in high profile cases.
