Santa Barbara lost a trailblazer this week. Sheila Lodge, the first woman elected mayor of Santa Barbara, died Wednesday at 97.
Lodge's public service spanned 36 years, as planning commissioner, councilmember, and finally mayor from 1981 to 1993, still the longest tenure in city history. Even in her 90s, she remained active in local government, showing up to advocate for protecting Santa Barbara's coastline and environment. She was also a mentor, opening doors for many who would go on to lead City Hall after her.
The Santa Barbara County Democratic Party thanks Mayor Lodge for her many years of public service. Our hearts go out to her family and loved ones during this time. 💐
