An arts organization’s most important duty and purpose during a pandemic is to support their artists, whether or not they can produce events. Art is born out of the artist’s need to create it, not out of the public’s need to experience it. The public is simply the beneficiary of the artist’s natural, inescapable, and often painful creative process. Artists ARE the company. An arts organization has no ethical grounds for fundraising when they abandon their artists.
