🌹 The roses at Santa Clara University are more than a defining feature of campus—they are part of a complex and evolving history.
The Mission Rose Garden sits atop land that was once the original Mission cemetery and later a student chapel site. After the Mission burned in 1926, roses were planted across the area, transforming it into the iconic garden we know today.
A key figure in this transformation was Father George Schoener, a Jesuit priest and horticulturalist known as the “Padre of the Roses.” After retiring to Santa Clara in 1939, he contributed extensively to rose cultivation on campus, helping shape the garden between 1939 and 1941.
Today, the Rose Garden remains a place of beauty, reflection, and learning—while also carrying a deeper historical context that continues to be studied and acknowledged.
