⚓️ 🪨 Do you sink uncontrollably when trying to do a back float, tread in deep water or in a front float? Let’s take back control!

To practice this sequence: sit on a step with your butt on the edge and lean back until your head can rest on the side of the pool.

1️⃣First we will take our lungs to each extreme: exhale with your mouth to fully sink on the step (large valve).

👀 Notice the longer you exhale the heavier you feel.

2️⃣ Next, inhale to 100% capacity with your mouth to rise up off the step.

3️⃣ Then exhale to sink back down and inhale to rise back up and repeat until you see and feel a noticeable difference between sinking and floating; between being heavy and light; between being full of air and low on air. Connecting these concepts to your breath will help you master this while in your back float, front float and deep water tread.

4️⃣ Repeat all of the above using you mouth to inhale and now your NOSE to exhale gently and slowly. 👀 Notice that it takes you longer to sink when you’re using your nose, a.k.a. the small valve, to exhale gently.

5️⃣ Now let’s try to stay floating and never sink. Everything stays the same in this part of the exercise except now you will use your nose to exhale very small amounts. Being careful not to get too heavy. As soon as you begin to feel like you might be getting heavy, take a large breath. And repeat over and over until it’s second nature and your buoyancy never fluctuates.

🗝️A ratio that seems to work is: inhale to 100% full and exhale no more than 50%. 👏👏👏The goal here is always take more air in than you let out in order to keep floating.

🗝️As you perfect this you will realize that YOU are in control of whether you sink or float. This is where confidence comes from!

Learning to use your breath to control your buoyancy is so important to be safe in the water.

I hope you enjoy this exercise. Stay tuned for part three where we will do the same exercise while in a backfloat.

🤗 Freshen up on all of the videos on my page so you’ll be ready for part 3!

⚠️ Please make sure you are practicing all of my tips safely.
