I know that the holiday season can be a time of great pain for those whose loved ones have passed on. This is especially true for those who have suffered their loss within the past year, when the absence is still sharp and the air itself holds the memory of those gone missing.

Dearheart, the last thing your loved one would ever want is for you to be hurt in any way. You know this already in your heart, how deeply your sorrow or any harm to you would wound them. I ask you to do something simple, yet meaningful. After sundown, when the world grows still, light a candle and place it on your windowsill (safely!) alongside a clear glass of water. Hold your loved one in memory for a moment, then call their name three times, slowly and with intention. In doing this you welcome their spirit. They will come to your side to offer comfort in your grief, not as a mere shadow of memory but as a presence felt in warmth and quiet reassurance.

This is an act of love and of connection. It is a way of saying that their light has not gone out, that it continues to burn within your heart and to shine through your life. The candle becomes a symbol of their spirit burning bright against the night and the water a reflection of your flesh and blood. This will help to banish the darkness and lift the weight of the sorrow you are carrying by connecting you to your beloved.
