Curly Maple scales mounted on a Garcia skinner!
My son asked me to sharpen his everyday carry for his post-graduation road trip. In case you were wondering if these things cut. This blade is several years old, demonstrating how 5160 holds up when it's used. Koa scales were pretty beat up, so they got a bit of a sand and a polish prior to giving it back to him.
I've had some excellent luck with post-production handle stabilization. Here I have sanded off the original tung oil finish, then sunk the finished knife into the vacuum pot. 12 hours under vacuum, then 36 of ambient pressure, then off to the oven to cure. A brief sand, some buffing, and then I'll be done. Again!
