After fifty years in the art world, I’ve realized that the real subject of my work has never been paint or cameras. It has always been people. Art is simply the doorway. Once someone steps through it, you see who they are, what they carry, and what they long for. If you pay attention long enough, you learn more about human nature than any textbook could ever teach.
The first lesson is that people don’t fall in love with technique. They fall in love with a feeling. A painting reminds them of a father they miss. A photograph looks like the town where they grew up. A quiet scene gives them a moment of peace they haven’t felt in years. The artwork is only the spark. The emotion is the real connection. Once you understand that, you stop trying to impress people and start trying to understand them.
I’ve also learned that most people aren’t looking for art when they walk into a gallery. They’re looking for connection. They want someone to understand why a certain image speaks to them. They want to tell a story they haven’t told in a long time. Art gives people permission to open up in ways everyday life rarely allows. I’ve had conversations with strangers that were more honest than conversations people have with their own families. All because a picture made them feel safe enough to talk.
Another truth is that people trust authenticity more than perfection. Perfect art might catch their eye, but honest art stays with them. I’ve seen simple pieces outsell technically flawless ones because they felt human. People respond to truth even when they can’t explain why.
I’ve learned that nostalgia isn’t really about the past. It’s about identity. When someone connects with a painting of a diner or a neon sign or a quiet street, they’re connecting with who they were at a certain moment in their life. Those memories are fragile and precious. When your work touches them, you’re not just creating art. You’re honoring someone’s history.
Most people don’t know what they’re looking for until they see it. They walk in saying they’re just browsing, and then something catches their eye and suddenly they aren’t browsing anymore. Art bypasses logic and goes straight to instinct. People recognize what they need only when it’s right in front of them.
And after all these years, I can say that people are more generous than cynical. I’ve seen kindness in the smallest moments. A smile. A quiet thank you. A person lighting up because something in your work touched them. Those moments have taught me to stay open and curious. The world may feel loud and chaotic, but people still respond to beauty with gratitude.
After fifty years, the lesson is simple. Art is the excuse. People are the masterpiece.
