Researchers at the Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences: University of Rochester have developed an energy-efficient, solar-powered desalination method that uses laser-etched black metal to convert seawater into fresh drinking water without producing harmful brine waste. By leveraging a self-cleaning surface that separates solid salts and moves them to a passive collection zone, the system prevents clogging while simultaneously allowing for the sustainable extraction of valuable minerals like lithium.
