Tonight is Yalda which is essentially winter solstice (longest night of the year!

Persians/ Iranians celebrate by getting together with family! Staying up late, telling stories and eating pomegranates and dried fruits and nuts and trading poetry, usually Hafez!

When I was a kid, we would go to my Grandma’s house, she had a traditional heater called Korsi which we would all sit around after coming home from the cold snow covered streets.

Korsi is a large low-height coffee table with heating elements underneath it, with a large heavy blanket over it. It is usually placed at the corner of a room with seating cushions on the floor next to it. We’d sit on the floor and put our cold feet under the blanket. The heating elements generates heat under the table and the blanket keeps the heat inside. Sounds like a fire hazard I know 😄 but it was perfectly safe and incredibly cozy!

Anyway, I have diverted! Yalda always brings with it the sweetest memories of my grandma and her korsi and her homemade sweets and lots of laughter next to cousins and .angelland
