When stump grinding is performed, the stump will be taken 12-18 inches below ground level, which can stimulate the dormant buds in the outer root systems of hardy trees to send up sprouts.
This is typical in hardy tree species such as redwoods, poplar, eucalyptus, privet, oak, and acacia. Most tree species will resprout from the stump when no grinding is performed, but the application of herbicide can help with this. Certain types of trees are known for pushing out epicormic sprouts, which are new growth straight from the root system.
