Sellers simply want to get the highest price possible for their home. And sometimes, that means hiding a few things in plain sight.

๐Ÿšฉ 1: Fresh paint in only one room
If every wall in the house looks dated except for one room with brand-new paint, ask why. A freshly painted area can sometimes be covering water damage, repairs, mold, stains, or other issues. If a seller is investing in a full refresh, itโ€™s usually the entire homeโ€”not just one room.

๐Ÿšฉ 2: Rugs in unusual places
A rug in the living room makes sense. A rug randomly placed in the kitchen or hallway? Take a closer look. It could be hiding damaged flooring, stains, cracks, or worn-out surfaces. Donโ€™t be afraid to move itโ€”youโ€™re allowed to inspect.

๐Ÿšฉ 3: Candles and air fresheners everywhere
One candle can be part of staging. Air fresheners in every room can be a different story. They may be covering pet odors, mildew, smoke, or other unwanted smells. If the scent is overwhelming, start asking questions.

๐Ÿšฉ 4: Furniture placed in odd spots
A couch blocking part of a wall. A dresser positioned where it doesnโ€™t belong. Sometimes furniture placement isnโ€™t about designโ€”it may be hiding wall damage, cracks, stains, or patchwork repairs.

๐Ÿšฉ 5: The AC isnโ€™t running during the showing
If the AC isnโ€™t on during a showing, pay attention. Sellers may be trying to avoid drawing attention to a faulty system, refrigerant leak, or costly repair. Replacing an HVAC unit can cost thousands, so make sure itโ€™s working properly before moving forward.

๐Ÿšฉ 6: Utilities are โ€œtemporarily unavailableโ€
The pool pump is "off." The dishwasher is "being repaired." The water heater is "scheduled for service." If something isnโ€™t working during the showing, assume thereโ€™s an issue until itโ€™s verified otherwise. Have your inspector test and confirm everything.

THE REALITY: None of these signs automatically mean the seller is being dishonest or that the home is a bad purchase. They simply mean you need to do your homework and work with an agent who knows what to look for and isnโ€™t afraid to ask the tough questions.
