When a loved one begins experiencing memory loss, many families wonder: Is assisted living enough, or is it time for memory care?
While both provide support, they’re designed for different levels of need. Understanding those differences can help families make informed, compassionate decisions centered around safety, comfort, dignity, and quality of life.
Read our latest article, “Memory Care vs. Assisted Living: What Families Need to Know,” to better understand the options and what to consider as needs evolve over time.

Dementia is not a single disease. It is a broad term used to describe a decline in cognitive function that affects daily life. But beneath that label are several different conditions, each with its own pattern, progression, and challenges.
Understanding the differences can help families make sense of what they are seeing.
Understanding the type of dementia provides a framework. It helps explain what is happening and what to expect. But just as importantly, it allows families to respond with more clarity and confidence.
Because in the end, this is not just about identifying a condition. It is about understanding a person — and providing the kind of care that honors who they are, every step of the way.

Dr. Raj Kalra, founder of Aroha Memory Care, was recently featured in the Kenwood Press discussing an important topic: fall prevention in older adults.
In the article, Dr. Kalra highlights how a single fall can significantly impact a senior's independence, mobility, and confidence—and why falls are often a critical turning point for families.
He explains that falls are the leading cause of injury-related hospitalizations for adults over 65 and are often influenced by multiple factors, including medications, balance changes, cognitive decline, and environmental risks. The key takeaway: many falls are preventable with the right combination of awareness, proactive care, and supportive environments.

Meet Joe Hansen, Executive Director at Aroha Memory Care
Joe Hansen brings more than 30 years of leadership experience in senior living and memory care, along with a deep personal commitment to caring for older adults. His background spans residential care, memory care operations, and team development, with a strong record of compliance, stability, and resident-centered leadership.
Reflecting on his first weeks at Aroha, Joe shared: “I have always loved seniors and helping people—it’s been part of who I am since childhood. Caring for older adults, especially those living with dementia, gives my work deep meaning and purpose.
In my first weeks at Aroha Memory Care, I’ve been reminded that truly compassionate, loving care is found in the small, everyday moments—patience, presence, listening, and genuine human connection. These moments shape how our residents feel each day and define the culture we are building together.
I consider myself a leader rather than a manager, and I truly enjoy building strong teams, developing coworkers, and supporting their growth both personally and professionally—because how we care for our team directly shapes how we care for our residents.”
Joe’s leadership philosophy aligns closely with Aroha’s values: care rooted in respect, consistency, and genuine human connection.

Valentine’s Day reminds us that love doesn’t fade — it deepens.
At Aroha Memory Care — where Aroha means love — we see it every day.
In the squeeze of a familiar hand.
In the smile sparked by a favorite song.
In the stories of first dances, lifelong partnerships, and decades shared.
Love lives here in the quiet moments. In the families who visit faithfully. In the caregivers who serve with compassion. In every resident whose life has shaped generations.
Today, we honor those beautiful stories — and the enduring power of love in all its forms.
Happy Valentine’s Day from all of us at Aroha. ❤️

Sharing Knowledge, Staying Grounded in Care
Earlier this month, Dr. Raj Kalra spoke at the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference in San Francisco, joining leaders from across healthcare to discuss the future of aging, care models, and community-based solutions.
While Dr. Kalra is often invited to share insights on innovation and care delivery at a national level, his work remains deeply rooted in the day-to-day lives of residents and families. Conferences like these allow him to bring practical, on-the-ground experience into broader conversations, while continuing to bring new ideas and perspectives back home to the communities he serves.
At the heart of it all is a simple priority: ensuring residents receive thoughtful, attentive, and respectful care every single day.
