A lot of students treat the Why College essay like a love letter to the school. Compliments, rankings, famous programs. But that's not what admissions officers are reading for.
They want to understand you — and whether this school is genuinely the right fit for where you're heading.
This video explains the distinction. Short, practical, and worth watching before your student puts a single word on the page.

Been thinking about what makes a tool actually worth using — not just impressive to demo.
My latest Substack piece gets into the design philosophy behind Soar. The short version: the hard part isn't the technology. It's solving the invisible friction in the counseling process — the stuff that doesn't show up in a product screenshot.
If you're curious about how I'm thinking about AI in college planning, head over to https://swamistakeoncollege.substack.com/. The post is called "The Switch on the Wall: The Hard Part is Invisible."

Most families build their college list backwards.
They start with rankings. Then prestige. Then what sounds impressive.
But the question that actually matters is simpler: would my student be happy there?
Not just admitted. Happy. Academically, socially, financially.
Fit is everything. Start there, and the whole process gets clearer.

Here's the mistake I see on almost every Why College essay.
Students write about the college. Rankings. Reputation. "Vibrant campus community." That's not a Why essay. That's their brochure.
Admissions readers already know what their school offers. They want to know why YOU belong there.
The fix is simple: start with what you're genuinely pursuing, then connect the dots to what that specific college makes possible. The best Why essays feel like a real conversation between a student's goals and a school's resources.
Quick test: if you swapped in a different school's name and the essay still worked, rewrite it.
