Why do we spend a week every year on water safety in the summer?
An astonishing 4,500 people die every year from drowning, for an average of 12 people a day. In fact, it is the #1 cause of death among children ages 1 to 4.
To make it worse, the number appears to be rising. Compared to just 7 years ago, drownings are up about 10%.
So what can we do? Start teaching water safety EARLY. Swimming lessons for little ones are always a great idea, but even before that, begin to establish rules and expectations. NEVER put your face down in water. NEVER approach a pool, lake, or even a bathtub without an adult, and NEVER swim alone!
