For we visit what has been called the "most important single traffic device in the history of auto transportation." The seatbelt? The cup holder? Actually it is the painted center - - - lines for highways (first used in 1911) which eventually led to the U.S. Pavement Marking System. (There are over 7 million miles of painted lines on paved U.S. roadways.)

Got potholes? Don't speed up your car to "jump" them and don't slam on your brakes. Instead, slow down, release your brake before you come to the pothole, straighten your steering wheel and drive through it. (Turning your wheel to avoid it is more likely to cause tire and wheel damage.)

For we had a bright idea to honor the “idiot” light (supposedly coined by Lee Iacocca) or “check engine light” (named by smart marketing people!) which was first used in cars in the 1930’s instead of oil pressure gauges and volt meters. Today’s check engine lights are part of an early warning computer-based system known as OBD, or On Board Diagnostics, which were required in all U.S. cars starting in 1996 as part of the Clean Air Act.
