In the line of duty ~ you just never know.

Just before 11 p.m. April 29, 2025, a Sarasota Police officer on bike patrol encountered a man in crisis who had climbed onto the outside of the John Ringling Causeway railing and was threatening to jump.

The officer immediately called for assistance and began calmly speaking with the man, working to build trust and keep him engaged. Additional supervisors and members of the department’s Crisis Negotiation Unit (CNU) responded and, for several hours, maintained steady, compassionate communication focused on bringing the situation to a safe resolution.

This incident reflects extraordinary teamwork, patience and an unwavering commitment to preserving life. Congratulations to Lt. Combs, Lt. Shellhammer, Sgt. Frangioni, Officers Bieker, Collins, Kismartoni, Pietron, Dederick, Lynn, Bruno, Roberts, Howell and Manning, and Detectives Stevens and Bobitz on receiving the Life Saving Award.
