I have introduced myself and urged you to support my campaign for Hospital Board. This election is not about me, it’s about your healthcare.

Sarasota Memorial is the only public hospital in the region, and it is governed by the nine members of the Sarasota County Hospital Board.  The board is charged with setting the strategic direction of the organization and serves as stewards of the public resources and tax revenues that support the hospital.

It takes decades to build the legacy, reputation and staff that the Sarasota Memorial Hospital Health Care System has secured.  I am running for seat 3 of the board, one of four seats that will be decided in the November election. I am running because I believe we need to Protect the legacy of Sarasota Memorial.  That legacy is being undermined by the recent promotion of unscientific treatments and rhetoric that puts profits over patient care.

The reputation of Sarasota Memorial was built by the excellence of the medical and nursing staffs.  We need a board that Respects that excellence.   It’s clear we need board members who base their decisions on medical expertise and who genuinely care for our community, and for the staff of the health care system.

November 5, 2024 is just over two months away. This election is critical for the future of our public hospital. I am Dr. George Davis, candidate for Hospital Board seat 3 at large and I am ready to serve on DAY ONE.

I bring over 35 years of medical experience. For over 7 years I have been a palliative care consultant in Venice. My experience in family medicine, medical ethics, and hospice care is extensive. This included being elected as coroner with its sensitive responsibilities. I feel privileged to have the skill and training to care for patients and families in very emotional, difficult circumstances.

A vote for me is a vote for a candidate with a unique and broad perspective, ready to contribute energy and expertise to the board on day one. For over 10 years I have served on a hospital board reaching the vice-chair position. During that time, I was chair of the ethics committee, and chair of the quality improvement committee. Overseeing quality is a major function of the board.

The threat to move to privatization is still real. Wherever that has happened quality of care goes down while stockholder profits go UP. There is an undercurrent to privatize by the governor and other leaders. The pressure is growing as demonstrated by the bills introduced in Tallahassee yearly. I promise I will fight to keep the hospital public. I will resist because no leader is putting that pressure on me.

Vaccines save lives. Vaccines for whooping cough and measles have been 98 per cent effective and have prevented disease. Covid vaccines saved lives also. Measles will be back in the winter. Covid is on the rise. Without vaccines, the risk of our children getting very sick is real. It was encouraging that voters blocked the anti -science candidates in the recent primaries, but that’s not enough. We need to challenge vaccine hesitancy and promote science.

Over the past two months I have introduced myself and presented an overview of Hospital Board Issues.* November’s Hospital Board election is critically important, it will determine control of the board. Your healthcare is at risk if the board is taken over by those who would turn the last public hospital in our county into a “for profit” enterprise.

I believe that my opponents will be pressured to privatize the hospital. If such an action is taken, unprofitable departments such as obstetrics, trauma care and mental health care will be reduced or eliminated. We have seen the effects when a public hospital is taken over by stockholders.

Our award-winning hospital will not remain a teaching facility. The ratio of patients to staff will be increased to create a larger return for shareholders. That means less care for patients as nurses are told to care for more patients.

Don’t take your level of care for granted. The potential chaos on the board will threaten the retention of our stellar science based medical professional staff. They deserve your support.

I am Dr. George Davis. I am running for the hospital board at-large seat 3. I am a retired family physician and have practiced for over 35 years. In addition to my MD degree, I have a master’s degree in bioethics. I was previously elected as county coroner and served in that role for four years in New York State. I have served as vice chair on the board of directors of Columbia Memorial Hospital in New York State. I continue to consult in palliative care.

My wife, Marsha, and I moved to Venice over 7 years ago. We have both been active in serving our Venice community. I served as chair on the City of Venice Environmental Advisory Board. I was a community member of Sarasota Memorial Hospital’s ethics committee.

I decided to run for the hospital board because of my concern at efforts to privatize our hospital and to ignore science based medical practice. These efforts will hurt patient care and seriously jeopardize the retention and recruitment of the highly-trained physician and nursing professionals who now work at SMH. We must not compromise the excellent, compassionate care available to all of us at SMH.
