Algeria's history began during colonial times.
Reality: Algeria's history spans thousands of years and multiple civilizations. Algeria was home to ancient civilizations, including Numidia, Phoenician settlements, Roman cities, and Berber kingdoms long before modern colonization.

West Africa Has No Great Civilizations
Reality: West Africa's civilizations helped shape global trade, scholarship, art, and culture. Their legacy still matters today. The Mali Empire, Songhai Empire, Ashanti Kingdom, Benin Kingdom, and many others built powerful states, advanced trade systems, and influential centers of learning that shaped world history.

The Nok Civilization Never Existed
Reality: Long before modern nations existed, the Nok people were creating remarkable art and technology in West Africa. Archaeological discoveries in Nigeria have uncovered thousands of Nok terracotta sculptures dating back more than 2,000 years, proving the civilization's existence.

Benin Bronzes Were Made in Europe
Reality: The Benin Bronzes were created by highly skilled artisans of the Kingdom of Benin centuries before European colonization. They remain some of Africa's greatest artistic achievements. The Benin Bronzes weren't imported; they were masterpieces created by African craftsmen. History deserves to be told accurately.

Ghana's nickname "Gold Coast" is undeserved.
Reality: For centuries, Ghana has been one of the world's most important gold-producing regions. Ghana earned the name "Gold Coast" for a reason.

West Africa is entirely dry.
Reality: Countries such as Liberia, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, and Nigeria contain tropical rainforests rich in biodiversity. West Africa isn't all desert. Vast rainforests support incredible wildlife and ecosystems.

Timbuktu is fictional.
Reality: Timbuktu was a real city and one of the world's great centers of learning, trade, and scholarship. Timbuktu wasn't a legend. It was one of history's greatest centers of knowledge.

There are no modern skylines in West Africa.
Reality: Cities such as Lagos, Accra, Abidjan, and Abuja feature impressive skylines, luxury developments, and modern infrastructure. Modern skylines aren't limited to Europe, Asia, or America. West Africa is building upward, too.

Liberia was a European colony.
Reality: Liberia declared independence in 1847 and is Africa's oldest modern republic. It stands apart in African history as one of the continent's earliest independent republics.

Côte d'Ivoire is only about cocoa ?
Reality: Ivory Coast grows cocoa, but that's only part of the story. Its economy is one of the strongest in West Africa.
The country has diversified industries, including finance, manufacturing, telecommunications, transportation, and energy.
