Inshore Baiting Up Tips!
July 18, 2025
Hello All Fishers,
Since it’s Friday and you might be planning to go Inshore fishing tomorrow, here’s an inshore baiting up tip you can use! This information was given to me by Captain Justin Rahn Inshore specialist Miss Judy Charters
Captain Justin suggests with our outgoing tide starting early in the am you will have time to catch your own live bait. Here is your tip: Go to an area where you have caught or seen shrimp jumping before. If you are using a trolling motor the propeller blade will sometimes spook the shrimp causing them to jump. Or sometimes, just throwing the cast net, will make enough bottom stir to cause the shrimp to jump! The bottom line is where you see the shrimp jumping, well, throw your net.
While you are looking for shrimp, you should
also be looking for surface schools of finger mullet. If you see them, I suggest catching them. At this time of the year, finger mullet is the best bait to use. Why? Larger baits keep the fe**sh fish from attacking! Why? They cannot eat finger mullet! It is a moot point! What’s a fe**sh fish? It is a small fish that’s known for destroying a great bait shrimp one part at a time.
The best news is once you catch your bait and take a breather, it will be time to fish that incoming tide. See you at that special incoming drop!
Thanks for Reading! Captain Judy
PS: My newest book Hoochie Coochie Tuna Fire Tail! It is out and it is not about fishing!
What’s the book about?
First let’s talk about the name, Hoochie-Coochie Tuna Fire Tail! My father favorite lure for catching fish and attracting women! (according to him!) I can’t recall how many times I heard my father say, “Now that’s a fine Hoochie Coochie Tuna Fire Tail!” If we were on the boat, it was a bait, if it was while on land, well I think you get the just of it! He also called some particulars lures and ladies “Sapphires!” (Could be the title of my next book, which by the way I am already working on! Stay tuned!) Why? There is lots more interesting information to be written!
What is the book about? Well, for many years, I have been writing stories about my life with my father and his life with those that came before me! and here a short list of things: gangsters, hijackers, fishers, ex-wives, stepmothers, his colorful as well as colorful girlfriends, and there is much more!

It is about gangsters, hijackers, heroes, mayhem, burials, yellow cabs, and I could go on, but you will need to purchase the book to really find out. At least to those that have already read the pages say, “They were not disappointed!” You see when my father passed in 1993, I found out…..

Inshore fishing report
For those that want to do some inshore fishing, well the fishing has been pretty darn good! While using an assortment of artificial shrimp patterns, live mud minnows, live finger mullet, and live shrimp the bite very good. Now don't get me wrong, this bite is not like it is after the water temperature gets to and stays at 65 degrees plus!
My father used to always say, “When it’s 65 degrees everything is alive!”
However, we are not quite there yet, but here’s where was are: Water temps are on the rising as I doing this report the water temp in the river was 59.9 degrees. What does this mean? Well, 60 plus degrees is just around the corner and when it arrives no cold front is likely to bring it back down. The best news is that the fish that have been moving and feeding so slowly are now more in the I want to eat mode. Believe you me this is where we the fishermen can get involved! Why?? All fish are going to start eating, because they have too!
So therefore, if you want to be part of this and want to give February inshore fishing a try for red fish, spotted sea trout, striped bass aka rock fish, black drum, and sheepshead give me a call Captain Judy a call 912 897 4921
What am I doing? Answering the phone! Thanks Captain Judy
