I saw Tim McCarver recently on a tv broadcast and thought "maybe this is it"....then sure enough he passed away soon after. McCarver was a GREAT color commentator, my god was he good. He called GREAT play-off games, had a GREAT feel for the game and ALWAYS knew what was going on. Those are just some of the reasons he called more World Series games than any one else.
A former catcher, McCarver could see potential pivotal pitches from a mile away .LIKE NO ONE EVER HAS, or will. Just watch the link below, it's the stuff of legend.

He also told us:

"When a catcher has to use his thumb to give signs, that means the pitcher has more than four pitches."

"It's much easier to work a good hitter than a poor hitter. Poor hitters have no idea what you're going to throw to begin with, so why try to outthink them? You go after them with stuff, rather than with pitch selection. But there's beauty in working a good hitter."

McCarver also won two World Series titles and was a two time All-Star.
