With the school year slowly wrapping up, our Prevention Educators are going through some of the evals from the year. The 7th grade students learn that just because someone doesn't say "no", that doesn't make it a yes. Coercion is the act of pressuring someone to do something that they don't want to do - this can be by physical force, verbal pressure or drugs or alcohol.
This 7th grade student learned that in order to have consent it need to be a clear enthusiastic yes.

We tell young people:
“You can come to me.”
“I’m always here.”
“Tell a trusted adult.”
But those words only matter if our actions match.
Being a trusted adult means:
Believing before investigating
Staying calm when things are hard to hear
Not protecting reputations over people
Getting support if you don’t know what to do
Because when adults minimize, dismiss, or defend harmful behavior, young people notice.
And next time? They might not tell anyone.
If you’re a teen reading this:
If an adult didn’t show up for you, that says something about their readiness, not your worth.
If you’re an adult reading this:
We can do better...and we have to.
Because “help is always available” should be something young people experience, not just something they’re told.
