Last summer, a very special common tern was captured for the 9th time in its life at 29 years old. We recently received confirmation from the USGS Bird Banding Laboratory that he’s tied for the U.S. longevity record with a common tern from Massachusetts. This tern was originally banded in 1995 as a chick in the same place it was recorded in 2024, at Interstate Island – located in the tip of Lake Superior between Wisconsin and Minnesota.

The purple and yellow dots on this map represent individually tracked common terns during migration. In the upcoming weeks, common terns will make the nearly 5,000 mile trip north. If tern number 962-67245 is among them, he’ll be rounding out his lifetime miles at around 300,000 miles.

That’s like flying to the moon and a quarter of the way back!

The amazing lifespan of this bird and the distance it has traveled speak to the value of the Wisconsin DNR and partners' long-term banding and monitoring, and habitat restoration programs for Wisconsin endangered species.
